 wireless connection troubleshooting and solutions
Article Your first choice to try to fix up the wireless connection:
• Go to Start/Control Panel/Network and Connections
• Right click the wireless connection and then choose repair
(Alternatively, you can find the wireless connection icon in the Systray, and then right click the icon and choose repair)

IF THE ABOVE CANNOT RESOLVE YOUR PROBLEM, READ THE FOLLOWING PLEASE

Configure your connection:

• Click the Start
• Choose Control panel
• Then Network Connections
• Select Wireless network Connections
o Right click
o Select View Available Wireless Networks
• Highlight the network you wan to connect to
• Now click Advanced
• Select the wireless network tab
• Highlight the network in then configure
• In the properties window
• Double click SSID (service set identifiers, to identify a particular network where a user wants to connect)

Connect to the wireless network but cannot surf the web:

First, check if you get a IP address:
• Select Start then Run
• Type in cmd (or you can go to start/all programs/accessories/command prompt)
• In the command prompt, type in ipconfig
• Now there will be some numbers appear, so check out those numbers. If the IP address read 192.168.dot something dot, that means you have a valid IP address and are connected to the network, then the problem that stops you from surfing the internet could be your firewall, wireless card configuration, WPA( Wi-Fi Protected Access, a certification program created by the Wi-Fi Alliance to secure the wireless computer networks), WEP (wired equivalent privacy, an algorithm) encryption keys or browser issue such kind of software related issues.
• This time, in the command prompt window, if it read 169.x.x.x.x, that means you are not connected to the network. Usually, the address beginning with a 169 is a Microsoft Auto-configuration. At this point, the machine broadcast out for an IP but did not receive one ( this just like a show is broadcasted through the satellite and someone who wants to watch the show, however, this person does not have a device to receive the signal from the satellite, so he/she could not watch the this show). For details about this problem, please see “Cannot Connect”.
• If the number appears in the command prompt is 0.0.0.0 for the IP address, then you are not connected to the network, so check your connection configuration and the adaptor and refer to the manual accompanying with your wireless card and adaptor.

Check if you can ping (ping tool is used to self test the network interface card of the computer or as a speed test):
• Following the same steps above to bring up the windows command prompt
• This time, type in a domain name just after ping, for an example “ping google.com” (wait a short while for response)
• Now check the value for an example: “packets sent =4”, “Received =4” and “Lost=0”
o A zero means good, your adaptor is working and sending a signal
o So, the problem is most likely software related such as your firewall, security software, WPA or WEP encryption keys again, or you need to check the wireless card configuration, the related drivers and browsers or even contact with the manufactures of your network devices.
o If it reads all the 4 packets lost, that means a signal is not going out, then check if there is any update for the adaptor, or if there is any packets lost, that may be the signal strength issue, so just try different locations ( the nearer from the device, the better signal you can receive)

To check if the browser is working properly:
• Open your browser and type in a web address, if the page cannot be displayed and ping test was good, now check network related software and internet connection configurations
• Or try another browser
